Sharon’s Success Story:
After one therapeutic yoga session, I was able to eliminate my medication!
I developed back problems about 5 years ago. After endless physio and massage therapy I finally had surgery. The surgeon told me I would have back pain for the rest of my life. My family doctor prescribed me two different types of medication. The medication worked well but, I didn’t want to take it for the rest of my life.
I ran into a friend who suggested I take up yoga. I wondered how yoga could help me but I was willing to try anything. After one therapeutic yoga session with Victoria I was able to eliminate my medication. I started doing the yoga routine every day and was surprised how quickly I stayed pain free. Even If had to miss a few days, the pain didn’t come back. I look forward to my yoga routine every day. I am extremely grateful that I was able to find a natural way to control my pain.
Yoga therapy is used for conditions of the cardiovascular system (heart disease, hypertension, coronary artery disease), the muscular-skeletal system (joint disorders, osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis), the nervous system (stress related disorders, anxiety, nervous disorders), the gastro-intestinal system (constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease), the respiratory system (asthma, allergic rhinitis and sinustitis, COPD), the endocrine system (premenstrual syndrome, menopause pre and post natal, menstrual disorders). People living with diabetes, cancer, chronic fatigue, injuries, abuse, obesity, addictions, depression and other health conditions can benefit from yoga therapy.
Yoga therapy assists the imbalance of body and mind by correcting breath patterns, nutrition, posture, muscles, organs/endocrine glands with appropriate movement (asana), relaxation (shivasana), meditation, balanced diet, cleansing and breath techniques.
Asana (sanskrit) is a set of postures that tone and stretch muscles, revitalizing organs and energizing the body and mind. Shivasana (sanskrit) is the practice of relaxation for the body, and to soothe the mind. The balance of stretching, toning and relaxation are key to a holistic practice. Meditation is a technique used to help stabilize the mind, increase concentration and focus, and develop will power and inner-energy. Those illnesses that are linked to diet and hygiene are corrected with a focus on whole food nutrition.
While modern medical science looks for pathogenic reasons or metabolic disorders to deal with disease yoga therapy takes a holistic view that approaches imbalance or disruption in the persons’ mind-body-spirit connection. While everyone is encouraged to see a health care practitioner, diagnosis is not necessary, as all chronic dis-ease is believed to originate from imbalance. Anyone can start a gentle practice of yoga at any time. For those with serious conditions, even in situation where little or no asana (movement) practice is possible – breath work or deep relaxation or meditation may be the beginning of practice, integrating all as able. . Breath work and proper relaxation can have profound affects and should never be considered worthless when asana (movement) practice is impossible.
A yoga therapist can assist people to learn to incorporate appropriate yoga habits into their daily lives. Long term relief can be realized with a regular yoga practice. Profound affects are possible with any length of regular practice. A yoga therapist gives guidance on what might be suitable for the beginner or experienced person who wishes to embark on a personal practice of yoga therapy.
Yoga’s therapeutic benefits can be realized in classes, however working one-on-one in private sessions allow students to develop a trusting relationship within their own being and with their yoga teacher or “coach”. Yoga therapists work in private practice and in wellness centers and hospitals.
Yoga therapy can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment.
